Harvest with restraint
Small batches, clean handling, and respect for forest cycles.
"The forest has always been my teacher. I've just been paying attention for 50 years."
Dwight D. Thornton, founder of Fiddlehead Heaven, has spent over fifty years foraging wild botanicals, mushrooms, and forest foods in the Acadian and Boreal forests of New Brunswick, Canada.
Dwight D. Thornton was born and raised in New Brunswick in the 1950s and '60s, in a woodsman and farming community where the Acadian Forest was not scenery — it was sustenance. He grew up in a landscape of birch and spruce, of river valleys and frost-edged mornings, where the knowledge of what the forest offered was passed between generations as naturally as any spoken language. From the time he could walk those trails, the forest was not a backdrop to his life. It was a living classroom, and it never stopped teaching.
His family heritage ran deep into that land. His ancestors were woodsmen and farmers who had long understood what the Boreal gave freely to those who knew how to ask. They chewed spruce resin straight from the tree, calling it “Hercules Gum” — not for novelty, but because they had learned that it built jaw strength and endurance in a way nothing else could. His father gathered dandelion blossoms for wine, reading the seasons with an instinct that was ancient even then. These were not hobbies or curiosities. They were ways of knowing the land, of maintaining a relationship with the forest that was reciprocal, respectful, and real. That knowledge became the bedrock on which Fiddlehead Heaven was built.
Dwight’s professional path followed the same course. He became the first person in North America to offer pure wild Chaga online — years before the wellness industry discovered it, before it appeared on supplement shelves or in health food aisles, before anyone was writing about it in magazines. He went on to formulate and process botanical extracts for North America Herb & Spice and Purely Wild Naturals LLC for over two decades, doing quiet, serious work that reached countless consumers without his name attached to it. Strength and nutrition authority Anthony Ricciuto recognized him publicly as a trailblazer in wildcrafted botanical nutrition — a recognition that felt, to Dwight, like the forest finally being credited for what it had always quietly provided. That legacy was largely built in silence. Fiddlehead Heaven is the step forward into the light.
Today, Dwight continues to make seasonal foraging expeditions deep into the Acadian and Boreal forests of New Brunswick — not out of habit, but out of an unbroken commitment to the land that has shaped his entire life. Every harvest is guided by the same principles of sustainable stewardship that his family practised generations before him: take what the forest offers, leave it better than you found it, and return next season. Fiddlehead Heaven is not a brand built around a person. It is a brand built around a practice — a lifetime of earned knowledge, made visible and made available to those who are ready to receive it.
“When you choose Fiddlehead Heaven, you’re choosing something grown, found, and given by the forest itself.”
